The Assignment
For our third big project this semester we were tasked with creating a work of art to be displayed in our new stem building. In our art we had to use chemical reactions to prove that chemists could be artists. We had to make a cohesive piece with our teammates that created a meaningful message and highlighted change. In our group we decided to take individualistic routes to create important parts of our school environment. For my project I created the "Cowstang". This half cow half mustang better represents our school as a community through the tough and hardy mustang and the caring providing cow. One of my teammates chose to make the San Marin logo using pigments they made themselves and the other made a basketball themed steel sheet similar to mine.
Personal procedure
I started with a sheet of galvanized iron and a sketch of my design. I wrapped the sheet in masking tape and then drew and cut out my design on the wrapped sheet. I then poured hydrochloric acid on the sheet to remove the protective zinc layer. Once the protective layer was removed I poured acidified copper nitrate over the sheet to turn the exposed portion into copper. After I removed the masking tape and used a sharpie to highlight parts of the art. Then i used an iron residue to create the yellow of the horse. after I was done i sprayed a protective seal on the artwork.
Content
Combustion reaction- One element through a dispersion of energy turns into multiple AB->A+B
Synthesis reaction- Two elements react and bond together A+B->AB
Single replacement reaction- two compound swap one of their elements A+BC->B+AC
Double displacement Reaction- Both the reactions in this lab were double displacements where two compounds swap aions to create aquis solutions when the metal is more reactive then the solutions. Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl(aq) + H2 (g) and Fe(s) + Cu(NO3)2(aq) → Fe(NO3)2 (aq) + Cu(s)
Aqueous solutions- Water is the solvent and is liquid
