Background/Purpose
For this assignment we were told to investigate a crime scene given to us by the teacher. We were given some information found at a fake crime scene. The scene was of the murder of Carlton Comet during a picnic he was hosting. There were five suspects at the scene and the murder occurred during a sudden blackout. A steak knife was the murder weapon and Carlton was stabbed in the back of his neck. With this information we were given small samples and clues from the crime scene(Fingerprints, Blood samples, Family clues, etc) that we had to analyse. For each analysis we learned a new method of forensic science and learned how to apply it with proof to our crime scene. The project was a nice puzzle and well replicated real forensic science and all its sometimes misleading and confusing variables.
Our Slideshow of Information, Evidence, and Proof found
Content
Fingerprinting-Take a print of someones finger tip that shows the design on their finger and can be used to identify them.
Ink Chromatography-Using a solute and Solvent to water out an ink splotch so that you can separate it out and see the individual pigments in the ink Karyotypes- A sum of all an organisms chromosomes displayed separated and in order so that you can analyze them easily. Pedigrees- A family tree that displays whether a specific disease or syndrome is found in the relative. DNA Structure- The pattern and organization of the proteins in the DNA. DNA replication- Using certain strategies you can split a DNA and use bases to rebuild each side of the DNA making two of the same DNA thus replicating. Alleles-The possible outcomes that could arise from two parent genes. Dominant- Genes that are dominant will always show when present in an allele. recessive- Genes that will only show if only their gene is present in an allele. DNA mutations- Mistakes or messups that show up randomly in DNA and cause defects in that specific genes job. Chromosomal disorders- disorders caused by mutations in the chromosomes of an organism. |
Reflection
Self: I deserve a solid 28 on work ethic. I take in consideration that I am often found having too much fun and wandering around the classroom, but I only do so when I have already completed all of my work for my group. Work ethic is how well I helped and collaborated with my team and in that category I excelled for our group. I did a fair amount of our labs and did my part of our writing. I was always kind and supportive of my group and often kept their spirits high while never falling behind in our work. Often times I was ahead in our work and would only then goof off but still in doing this I only lost time for individual work and I never slacked on anything including my team. On the electrophoresis step of our lab I did a lot to make our gel and to set up our study. Where I helped on all parts of the lab I also exceeded to help during our presentation, providing solid counter claims and evidence to back it up. Also Where I understand the our classroom instructor does not feel any appeal to me as a person I hope her thoughts on me as a scholar, learner, and worker will remain untainted.
Group: I as well think that our group as a whole deserves a group ethic of 28. Where it was obvious that one of our members was often unfocused and not as much of a contributor as others. I think that the group itself never fell behind and our projects and requirements were always met. We were all friends in our group and got to get our work done with accuracy and as much effort as the other groups. Our group was able to adapt well with one teammate often being absent and we accepted the obstacles in our way. We never fell behind or struggled with any projects and never overworked one teammate.
